The bookings of the all-new Toyota Veloz are currently underway at all authorised Toyota dealerships for a single 1.5 A/T variant, estimatedly priced at RM 95k. And, we know that a lot of Malaysians are waiting for the launch of this new MPV that replaces the Avanza in the brand’s local lineup. So, while we wait, it is better to know some interesting details about it.

Compared to the discontinued Avanza, the upcoming Toyota MPV is based on a Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA). It is the same platform that underpins the all-new 2022 Perodua Alza. So, just like the Perodua Aruz and Toyota Rush, the Alza and Veloz are also mechanical twins. The Veloz is locally assembled by Perodua at its Rawang plant.

With the new platform comes the same 2NR-VE 1.5-litre unit, which is, however, coupled with a new 7-speed CVT sequential shifting gearbox. Replacing the four-speed AT, the new gearbox setup offers an efficient power transmission for smooth and powerful acceleration and thus promises excellent fuel efficiency, as per the automaker.

In addition, there is a new suspension setup comprising MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. This ensures a seamless drive experience even with multiple passengers on rough roads, says Toyota.

In terms of size, the Veloz is considerably bigger compared to the Avanza. The former measures 4,395 mm (+205 mm) in length, 1,730 mm (+70 mm) in width, 1,700 mm (+5 mm) in height and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (+95 mm). The Veloz boot space measures 498 litres (with the third row stored).

The MPV is loaded with a lot of hi-tech systems and one of them is the new 9.0-inch freestanding infotainment display that fulfils all the entertainment needs of the occupants. The amazing part is that it comes with the Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready connectivity options. That means you do not need any USB cable to connect your phone to the vehicle, instead, a Bluetooth connection will do the needful.

Touted as a premium crossover, the Veloz MPV also offers you the facility of charging your mobile without using a charging cable. The car comes with a “Qi” charging pad, which is a global standard for wireless power and charging. The minute you put your phone on the charging pad, it starts getting charged wirelessly. Thus, it ensures that the driver and passengers can always stay connected to the world even during long drives.

Another modern-day feature you will get inside the 2022 Toyota Veloz is an Electric Parking Brake with an auto brake hold instead of the traditional parking brake. You just need to pull the lever to avoid the vehicle's motion when parked. It offers you much convenience and contributes to an effortless drive experience in everyday situations such as navigating through stop-and-go traffic or waiting for the traffic lights to turn green.

The upcoming Veloz is equipped with several active & passive safety features keeping all passengers safe and secure. And, a testament to that is its 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating. The Veloz is the first car that was assessed under the new & stricter ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 protocol and it secured the highest safety rating with a total score of 79.99 points.

Parts of the safety kit are - six airbags, an anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, seat belt reminder, and Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite. The latter includes a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and other advanced-driver assistance gears.

UMW Toyota offers the Veloz in a two-tone colour scheme with a contrasting black roof for the Blue Metallic and Silver Metallic hues. It is exclusive to Malaysia and costs an additional RM 1,300. Included in the single-tone colour options are White, Red Metallic, and Metallic Bluish Black.
