Los Angeles - Although Mazda is still keeping many details of its most rugged and durable SUV 2023 CX-50 secret, Mazda engineer Dave Coleman has provided a lot of information that allows us to better understand the size of the vehicle and what it is based on. Generally speaking, it is larger and more capable than the existing CX-5.

CX-50 is based on the same basic platform as Mazda3 and CX-30. This extends to the suspension design of the front MacPherson struts and the rear torsion beam. This is because the design of the platform takes into account the torsion beam. Coleman and Mazda believe that this suspension design is used to keep the vehicle movement simple and natural.

Although the CX-30 borrowed from its platform is an ultra-compact SUV, the CX-50 is a bit larger than the compact CX-5 in almost every dimension. It is longer, wider, and has greater ground clearance, but the overall height is slightly lower. The size is also good on the inside, with more legroom than the CX-5, although Coleman cannot give any specific dimensions inside or outside the CX-50. He also stated that the CX-50 is even wider than the CX-9, so it is actually too wide to be produced at Mazda's Hiroshima plant, so it is produced at the new Mazda-Toyota joint plant in Alabama. Mazda can also use these sizes, because the CX-50 is designed for North America, so ensuring that it can be used on the narrow streets of Japan and Europe is not a priority.

In addition to being larger, CX-50 is also more powerful than CX-5. Coleman revealed that it will have better towing capacity compared to the 2,000-pound limit of the old SUV, but he did not disclose the exact amount. In addition, to improve off-road capabilities, Mazda installed a heavy-duty all-wheel drive coupling and a larger clutch, which is larger than the CX-9 clutch. This is combined with the off-road driving mode we mentioned in the reveal article, and various parameters of off-road driving can be adjusted. Excluding the downhill control function, Coleman said that in order to make the brakes very controllable, to keep the driving settings simple and prevent the car from doing anything unusual, leaving control in the hands of the driver, this function is excluded.

Coleman revealed some other tidbits about the CX-50, which do not really belong to any particular subject area. Despite the similar name and roughly similar size, CX-50 will not replace CX-5 like CX-30 and CX-3. Obviously, these two SUVs are for different buyers. In addition, although he could not provide detailed information about the hybrid CX-50, he did say that it will still take a few years. It will also use some Toyota technology, but he won't say to what extent.
