So, suppose you want to build your own version of the Ford Eluminator F-100 show truck. An all-electric pickup truck exhibited at the SEMA show in 2021. Where will you start? In theory, it shouldn't be that difficult to get an F-100 donation truck, and Ford Performance is currently unable to manufacture Eluminator crate motors fast enough, even if customers need to purchase the batteries they need to power them.
How is the drivetrain integrated into the chassis now, and the suspension design-the leaf spring with the front end of the double I-beam?
Don't worry about all this, it's much simpler. Two words. Say it: sports car store.
During the SEMA show in 2021, the Speed Store in Mundlein, Illinois has been news as it has been for the past few years. And well-deserved, because the high-quality chassis manufactured by the company has won considerable reputation and followers. Therefore, Roadster Shop's products support countless buildings in the exhibition hall. Including the Eluminator F-100 on display at the Ford SEMA booth, RS itself showed off the new Low Pro chassis, which was designed to work with the air suspension of the old square-body general-purpose truck.
Based on the photos provided by Roadster Shop, we can now view the bare metal chassis provided to McLue-Lane Electric Racecars (MLe) for final assembly. Instead of energizing the F-100 chassis and having to deal with all subsequent troubles, Roadster Shop simply built a new one, designed around the battery pack and the drive subassembly of the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Unlike the 2019 Chevrolet E-10, the latter has a pair of Bolt EV battery packs on the bed, while the Eluminator F-100 battery pack is integrated on the floor, just like a suitable modern EV. Ford Motor Company sent the front and rear engine subassemblies to the Roadster Shop. These subassemblies were actually pulled from the Mach-E production line, as well as an extended-range battery pack, and said,'Here, do something. 'Do something, they did it.
Ford Mustang Mach-E is a one-piece design, so everything is bolted to the overall body structure of the vehicle, while the metal plate of the F-100 is always on the top of the frame and is connected with large bolts and bushings. Some old-fashioned things are needed, so using Roadster Shop's precision CNC laser cutting process, a traditional ladder frame pickup truck chassis is made with a full box of No. 10 steel frame rails.
The nose is supported by a heavy-duty shock tower, which is suitable for the front suspension of the Ford Mustang Mach-E's McPherson strut. At the rear, the rear drive motor and five-link suspension are installed exactly where the active axle and differential are located, which means that Ford Eluminator F-100 retains all the functions of its pickup truck.
Over time, Ford Performance plans to develop a broader component list for the Eluminator power system, including battery systems, controllers and traction inverters. Expect it to happen soon, because now you can buy a motor, but Ford will not provide any method of powering or managing it.
