Miss Da Ma swaggered on stage last night, showing her national costumes, including seven mannequins in blue and gold silk dresses.
Yesterday, 24-year-old Lishalliny Kanaran dragged the doll across the stage with her while participating in the international beauty pageant held in DC Hall in Bangkok, Thailand. The costume named "The 7 Ancient Princesses of Ulek Mayang" pays homage to a ritual dance in Terengganu, which is believed to have a healing effect on fishermen who are possessed by ghosts.
This exquisite costume was created by the art of Aldrin, a local bridal boutique. All mannequins wear headdresses and pose in ulek mayang dance poses, while Lishalliny wears traditional Malay male costumes in black and gold, representing shamans.
Other famous costumes in the competition included those of representatives from Thailand, Peru and Cambodia.
According to local folklore, Ulek Mayang tells the story of a sea princess who literally captured the soul of a fisherman she fell in love with. With the help of a shaman, his soul returned to his body, and the shaman summoned the princess and her sisters.
A total of 61 beauty queens competed for Miss International headwear and a cash prize of US$40,000. Last year's champion was Abena Appiah from the United States.
