A new restaurant is on the way to Charleston's developing upper peninsula.

Cleats, a new concept in casual dining for the sports-minded patron, plans to open next spring in The Refinery at 1640 Meeting Street Road, according to restaurant owners Nick Dowling and Jeremiah Schenzel.

It will be the second restaurant venture for the two. They opened Daps Breakfast + Imbibe on Ashley Avenue in 2018.

The sandwich-centric menu at Cleats will feature the owners' creative spin on classic deli staples as well as new options.

"When we created Daps we knew we wanted to create our own version of the perfect breakfast/brunch. We’re really excited to do the same thing with the menu items at Cleats," Dowling said. "Everything will be big, flavorful and shareable."

Schenzel said the space and menu will be created in a way that doesn't "pigeon-hole us into the traditional sports bar vibes and fare."

"We are excited to push flavor boundaries so that guests, both sports fans and non-sports fans alike, can enjoy the food and the atmosphere," Schenzel said.

The owners will bring the same food ethos they have instilled at Daps by continuing to use local purveyors such as Holy City Hogs and Fili West Farms.

The new restaurant will be housed on the first level with The Whale beer collective and Sweetgrass Vodka, all overlooking the Refinery's new amphitheater, which opens in August with live music performances.

"We’re huge music lovers so when we learned about the amphitheater aspect and The Refinery teams’ plan for live music, we knew we were building a partnership with the right team in the right space," Dowling said. "A dream come true, really."

The Refinery's upper floors are a mix of office tenants.

An Atlanta-based home decor and furniture design retailer will open its first South Carolina location in the Lowcountry next year.

Ballard Designs recently leased the 9,077-square-foot space formerly occupied by home furnishing store Pier 1 Imports at 1128 Market Centre Blvd. in Mount Pleasant Towne Centre. It will feature a "uniquely curated" selection of classic and contemporary pieces.

“Our new location ... presents a great opportunity to offer new — and existing — customers a unique in-person experience in designer home decor,” said Dominic Milanese, vice president of retail at Ballard Designs.

A shopping center representative called Ballard "the perfect addition" to the mix of retailers in the complex on U.S. Highway 17 near the Isle of Palms connector.

The store will be open every day, with abbreviated hours on Sunday. Grand opening plans will be announced later.

Founded in 1982, Ballard Designs operates 16 retail stores across 12 states in the U.S.

Another new restaurant could be added to the Courier Square development on the Charleston peninsula.

Leasing company Charleston Commercial is in negotiations with an Atlanta restaurant group to anchor the 6,305-square-foot corner suite at Meeting and Columbus streets.

Nick Maylander, leasing leader for Courier Square, said he hopes to make an announcement on the restaurant project soon.

The dining prospect comes after the owners of Kwei Fei Chinese restaurant on James Island recently leased 3,063 square feet at 128 Columbus St. Restaurateurs David Schuttenberg and Tina Heath-Schuttenberg plan to open the new Chinese concept in early 2023.

Heath-Schuttenberg said they are still working out the specific details, but the menu and space will be warm and modern. Both restaurants will operate under Always Awkward Hospitality.

Also opening in Courier Square in July is a second location for Totality Medispa. The medical spa has another site on Daniel Island.

Courier Square also houses the headquarters for apartment giant Greystar Real Estate Partners and is home to The Guild, a luxury apartment development.

If the new restaurant deal comes through, two 1,500-square-foot retail suites will remain available for lease.

A new Parker's Kitchen convenience store and gas station is in the works.

The Savannah-based company recently paid $1 million for 3.63 acres on the northeast corner of Jedburg Road and Dropoff Drive off Interstate 26. The property is diagonally across the intersection from a Greenville-based Spinx convenience store and gas station.

Parker's Kitchen is building another Charleston-area store on Savannah Highway at Bees Ferry Road and has another in the works at Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Ashley River Road where Wells Fargo Bank once operated.

The convenience store company has several other shops across the Lowcountry.

A lifestyle retailer that got its start in a Charleston mall kiosk and now has 34 stores in six states across the Southeast is celebrating its 20th anniversary at two Lowcountry stores.

Palmetto Moon will offer two in-store celebrations from noon-2 p.m. July 16 at shops in Mount Pleasant and Summerville to recognize the region that gave it its roots.

The events include grand prize drawings, giveaways, live music and other festivities to highlight the retailer's newest selection of Southern brands and up-and-coming Charleston makers.

Charleston Angler clothing and accessories are now available exclusively at Palmetto Moon, in addition to Coast apparel. The retailer also recently expanded its collections from Seabird Society, Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. and Southern Strut, alongside newly unveiled gifts from Rewined candles, Toadfish and Marsh Wear.

“As a company grounded in our customers, it’s an honor to celebrate this milestone with the local fans and producers who have been with us from the start,” said Palmetto Moon CEO John Thomas.

The retailer expects to open three more stores by summer's end.
