Ford wasted no time in launching a new track-focused variant of the seventh-generation Mustang. Baptized Dark Horse, this even sportier version has nothing sinister about it, quite the contrary!

The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse is therefore positioned at the top of the new Mustang range and inaugurates the first new performance label for the brand since the introduction of the Mustang Bullitt in 2001. It is neither more nor less than the Mustang most capable road car ever with a 5.0-liter V8, allowing it to be a direct replacement for the previous Mach 1.

A number of visual changes differentiate this Dark Horse from other Mustang models. The headlights first receive a dark background to accompany a new black grille. The side skirts drop lower and you can’t miss the dark rear spoiler, diffuser and exhaust tips either. New badges have also been designed, as has a new color called Blue Ember metallic.

The interior is also sportier with a suede-trimmed steering wheel with indigo blue stitching, while models equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission receive silver anodized paddle shifters. The Appearance Pack also adds Deep Indigo Blue seats.

Ford began working on the Mustang Dark Horse about three years ago and the goal has been to make the Coyote V8 compatible with heavy-duty track use. For this, it receives in particular the titanium connecting rods of the engine of the Shelby GT500, double throttle bodies. The power of this Msutang MkVII Dark Horse should reach if not exceed the symbolic bar of 500 hp.

But it’s not just power that makes this Dark Horse a track beast. With the « Track Sprint » package included, the standard six-speed Tremec manual transmission includes a specific oil cooler and the same for the automatic gearbox. As on the V8 GT fitted with the Performance Pack, there are brake cooling ducts, an auxiliary engine oil cooler, a rear axle cooler and a lighter radiator with more powerful cooling fans.

MagneRide shock absorbers are also fitted as standard on this Dark Horse and the struts have a reinforcement. That’s complemented by a bigger rear stabilizer bar and 19-inch wheels that are 9.5-inches wide front and 10-inches rear, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tyres. Finally, they accommodate a set of six-piston Brembo front brake calipers.

And those still looking for more performance can still opt for the Handling Package which adds a unique rear spoiler with an integrated flap, stiffer springs, thicker front and rear stabilizer bars and unique 19-inch wheels with Pirelli tires Wider Trofeo RS. At the extreme, carbon fiber wheels will also be available as an option! Ford adds that the introduction of Dark Horse marks the return of Mustangs to motorsport, which will be entered globally in a wide variety of series such as GT3, GT4 and NASCAR.

Ford has yet to announce pricing and availability details for the Mustang Dark Horse, but estimates start at $60,000 in the US, a price that could climb very high when paired with the many desirable options. And that’s without forgetting the maximum penalty she would receive in France…
