Toyota's 2022 GR86 sports car is a welcome addition - here the Japanese automaker shows off its awesome technology.

The second generation of the Toyota GR sports car offers more power and more refinement than its predecessor.

This allows the GR86 to be faster and more aggressive, living up to its name as a car that the Toyota Gazoo Racing division developed.

Toyota revealed a short video on YouTube how it came up with such an amazing recipe.

Described as a purpose-built enthusiast machine, the GR86 takes performance to greater levels thanks to various updates and upgrades.

Of course, there's a high level of engineering involved, including its best feature -- its 2.4-liter engine.

This mill steps up its game with more horsepower (228 hp) and higher peak torque at lower rpm (184 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm), for the driver, this means a more usable power curve throughout the rev band.

To achieve this performance, engineers enlarged the cylinder bore from 86 mm to 94 mm, and then improved the valve size and shape to allow greater airflow.

Interestingly, engineers also made the valve stems hollow to made them lighter.

Engineers also optimized the airflow throughout the engine and exhaust, for instance, they increased the internal diameter of the intake assembly and added streamlining plates to help minimize turbulence.

Also adding to the performance is the engine layout under the hood.

Thanks to the boxer engine's horizontal cylinder design, engineers can place the mill ultra-low within the bay, resulting to lower center of gravity and greater handling dynamics.

To further improve handling, GR engineers also increased the strength and rigidity of GR86's construction.

They made it possible with strategically placed high-strength steel, new cross members on the front, a full-ring frame on the rear, as well as a strut stabilizer bar linked directly to the sub-frame.

Nevertheless, engineers managed to keep the GR86 kept its weight low with aluminum body paneling.

Engineers also complemented the increased power and enhanced structural strength, with the right suspension -- a sport-tuned MacPherson strut design with new rebound springs as well as while a double-wishbone style, multi-link suspension.

These elements work with stiffer springs and sport-tuned shock absorbers to deliver a lively-yet-predictable driving feel.

To instill driving confidence, engineers ensured that the GR86 features serious stopping power - this comes via a large 11.6-inch front and 11.4-inch rear vented brakes, as well as the standard performance tires wrapping either 17-inch wheels or forged black 18-inch rims (Premium grade).
