Imported cooling system solutions and maintenance

Have you noticed that many European cars and SUVs no longer have the coolant replacement intervals listed in the service information? This may be because the cooling system needs to be repaired or replaced before this interval. It can be a hose, a plastic connector or a water pump. Your store has options. Some replacement parts may be better than original parts. When dealing with the complexity and longevity of today's vehicles, these parts can create a win-win situation for your store and customers.

These solutions can simplify maintenance and prevent future failures. In a 45-minute webinar sponsored by CRP Automotive, the company that brought you Rein Automotive, we will introduce six common cooling system repairs for BMW, Audi and Volkswagen. These repair solutions will cover more than 6 million cars on the road today.

If the customer says that there is a rattling or rattling under the vehicle, the outer and inner rods may need to be replaced.

The customer indicated that there was a rattling or clicking noise under the vehicle.

Check whether there is an excessive gap between the outer tie rod and the inner tie rod, and replace it if necessary.

1. Lift and support the vehicle.

3. Install two standard wheel mounting nuts, the plane is opposite to the rotor, and the rotor is diagonally opposite.

4. Install the magnetic dial indicator (2) on the inner side of the brake disc, and then align the contact pointer (1) of the dial indicator with the axis of the stud and contact the outer rod.

Note: When checking the free gap, do not rotate the lever. Just because the lever is easy to rotate does not mean it must be faulty. Using more than light hand pressure will cause false readings.

6. Grasp the outer tie rod near the ball head bolt, and try to gently press it with your hand (less than 10 pounds) to move the tie rod up and down vertically.

7. Measure and record any free swimming movement of the drawbar.

8. Remove the magnetic dial indicator.

9. Remove the standard wheel mounting nuts from the two studs.

10. If the free gap in the tie rod exceeds 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), replace the outer tie rod. If the clearance at the outer tie rod is less than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), check whether the inner tie rod has clearance. Please refer to the steps below.

Note: Before checking the clearance of the inner tie rod, be sure to check and repair (if necessary) the clearance of the outer tie rod first. Otherwise, you may get wrong results.

1. Grasp the inner rod near the bellows of the steering gear and try to move the rod vertically up and down. If you feel any free play, replace the inner tie rod.

2. If you cannot feel free play, install the front wheels.

3. Remove the bracket and lower the vehicle.

1. Lift and support the vehicle.

2. Remove the wheel mounting nut (3), and then remove the front tire and wheel assembly (1).

Note: When loosening the lock nut and rotating the inner tie rod, be careful not to twist the bellows at the inner tie rod. Remove the clamp at the inner tie rod to ensure that the bellows can move freely before rotating the inner tie rod.

3. Loosen the tie rod lock nut (3) at the outer tie rod (5).

4. Remove the outer tie rod end nut (1) at the steering knuckle (2).

5. Using the puller (2), separate the outer tie rod end (1) from the steering knuckle.

6. Release the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod. Count the number of turns when the outer tie rod is removed. This will provide you with a good starting point when reassembling and setting up the toes.

1. Remove the outer tie rod.

2. Remove the pull rod lock nut from the inner pull rod.

Note: If equipped with AWD, it may be necessary to remove the heat shield (3) above the inner tie rod bellows (2) to better access the bellows clamp.

3. Remove the clamp (1) that secures the bellows (3) to the inner tie rod.

4. Remove the clamp (2) that secures the bellows (3) to the steering gear body.

6. Install a suitable inner tie rod removal tool on the inner tie rod hex (1).

Note: If the inner tie rod cannot be removed with the designated tool, do not use a hammer or heat to loosen it. It will damage the steering gear. Replace the entire steering gear.

7. Loosen and remove the inner tie rod (2).

8. Remove the stroke limiter (2) from the rack (3).
